- south of Muskoka and just north of Barrie, Ontario's Lake Country is located just 1 hour north of the Greater Toronto Area. DID YOU KNOW Lake Simcoe is the fourth-largest lake in the province. It is 30 km long and 25 km wide (725 kmē). At the time of the first European contact in the 17th century, the lake was called Ouentironk ("Beautiful Water") by the Huron natives. In 1687, Lahontan called it Lake Toronto, an Iroquioan term meaning gateway or pass. The later French traders referred to it as Lac aux Claies, meaning "place where trees stand in the water," in reference to the several Huron Fishing weirs," located in the lake. It was renamed by John Graves Simcoe, the Lieutenant-Governor of Upper Canada in 1793, in honor his father John Simcoe.
