CONSERVING CREATIVITY: SCULPTURAL INSTALLATIONS IN GRANT’S WOODS

July 31 - October 1

OMAH Logo 300x300 - CONSERVING CREATIVITY: SCULPTURAL INSTALLATIONS IN GRANT'S WOODS

When Ninette moved to Orillia in 2013, she walked the trails of Grant’s Woods and opened herself to the restorative powers of nature.  It was her place to relax and rejuvenate.  She wanted to develop a project that would enable her to share these experiences with fellow artists and nature followers. Inspired by outdoor installations at The Tree Museum (Gravenhurst), The Hotbox Project (Joshua Creek), and The Haliburton Sculpture Forest (Haliburton) as well as the concept behind Shinrin-yoku (forest bathing), curator Ninette Gyorody invited six professional regional artists to create natural site-specific outdoor sculptures to be installed at Grant’s Woods Conservation Centre.

Conserving Creativity and the 17% Pledge:

Funded by the Ontario150 Community Celebration Program, in partnership with the Couchiching Conservancy the intent of this project was to bring awareness to the 17% Pledge for our provincial and federal governments to have committed to bring at least 17% of the landscape under conservation by 2020. There is hope that by drawing attention and awareness to The Couchiching Conservancy sites through this exhibition at Grant’s Woods, that we all can get close to this target well before 2020.  The works will be installed by the end of July at selected sites within Grant’s Woods.  Visitors to the site are encouraged to find the works of art along the trails, read about the artists’ inspirations, and sign the commitment to the 17% Pledge.
