Family Friendly Resorts

No matter what season it is, there’s no better place for family bonding than Ontario’s Lake Country. For more than 100 years, Lake Couchiching and Sparrow Lake have been beacons for families at two renowned resorts.

Whether it’s paddle boarding in the summer or skating in the winter, family-fun is paramount at Fern Resort and Bayview Wildwood Resort, both of which have been family operated since the 19th century.

Five generations of the Downing family have literally grown up at Fern Resort, and the Stanton family can say the same, raising five generations on the shores of Sparrow Lake at Bayview Wildwood Resort.

There is no doubt they know a thing or two about keeping everyone happy while on vacation.

Boasting 105 lakefront cabins, suites and rooms – each with a fireplace – Fern Resort offers exciting activities for families, from axe throwing and pickleball in summer, to crokicurl in winter. Supervised programs also give kids the opportunity to socialize with their own age group. All-inclusive packages mean one price for accommodations, three meals a day, activities and evening entertainment.

“I think in today’s world, where you have so much frantic activity, we give our guests a chance to slow down and reconnect,” says Stefanie Moy-Shuster, marketing coordinator at Fern Resort.

Enjoying the beauty of nature, set apart from the rest of the world, yet with all the amenities, Bayview Wildwood is also known for its all-inclusive packages and activities for all ages. Everything needed to reconnect to nature is included, such as canoeing and kayaking, biking, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and skating on the frozen lake – and relaxing on Muskoka chairs too!

If you have a family of thrill seekers and action-packed adventure is what you want, then Horseshoe Resort is the perfect week-long, weekend or day getaway with everything from Tree-top trekking to mini ATVs. Accommodations, as well as two restaurants, are just steps away from the fun.

While the resort is known for winter with 28 downhill runs and over 30 km of groomed trails, it cemented its status as a four-season destination in 2017 when it completed Lake Horseshoe to accommodate watersports. This massive reservoir holds 12 million gallons of water and is 27 feet at its deepest point. It’s perfect for all ages, from little ones at the sandy shoreline, to older kids enjoying the water trampoline, to those who want to wakeboard.

The lake is also used to make snow in the winter. Clever!
