MAPLE MASTERPIECES Orillia’s downtown will be awash in giant maple leaf-shaped sculptures this summer to celebrate the twin 150th birthdays of both the Sunshine City and Canada. The popular Streets Alive program, which annually animates the city’s main street with unique sculptures, will be bigger than ever in 2017 as 50 giant metal maple leaf-shaped works of art – with one side of each reflecting the heritage of Orillia and the other showcasing Canada’s history – are placed throughout the quaint downtown. In addition, 50 wooden maple leaf-shaped cutting boards – crafted and designed by local high-school students – will adorn windows in area shops and businesses, while ceramic maple leaf ornaments created by local children will be hung on a specially-designed metal tree that will spend time at the Orillia Museum of Art and History, the Orillia Public Library and other public spaces. “The Streets Alive program is an opportunity to see one-of-a-kind sculptural pieces that tell a story, are interactive and create a dynamic five-block walking tour of the downtown,” said event founder Leslie Fournier. “My greatest joy is seeing the art out there and people enjoying it and interacting with it.” She said many people choose to […]

Orillia Perch Festival – Catch Some Fun
There was something about that spot bathed in sunlight on the bank of the canal leading into Lake Simcoe. It wasn’t the quietest – in fact lots of giggling and squeals of excitement could be heard. Those fishing weren’t the most intense with the best and latest fishing gadgets – no, they were a pretty typical family with little kids dressed safely in life jackets clutching their fishing poles. But boy, were they pulling in the perch. And that definitely made the trip from Milton, Ontario to the Orillia Perch Festival very satisfying. “It’s a chance for us to be together and have fun,” said Lisa Straka, whose five-year-old son and seven-year-old daughter were reeling in perch as she spoke. “We’re having a picnic; we’re with our best friends; and it’s a beautiful day. How can you go wrong?” They are just a few of the approximately 4,000 people who cast their lines into Lakes Simcoe and Couchiching during North America’s largest registered fishing derby each year. And there’s good reason, says festival organizer Doug Bunker. With more than 60 tagged perch worth $500 each, plus thousands of dollars in daily, weekly and Grand Prize draws, anyone of any age […]
150 YEAR-OLD TWINS!
Orillia and Canada, each born in 1867, will celebrate their 150th anniversary, together, this year. “We are having a year-long community celebration to mark the sesquicentennial of both Orillia and Canada,” said Jacqueline Soczka, the city’s manager of culture. “It’s important to take pause once in a while to look back through the ages to celebrate who we are and to look to our future so we can grow as a community. We have so much here to celebrate.” Orillia is well-known for spawning literary legend Stephen Leacock, Group of Seven painter Franklin Carmichael, iconic sculptor Elizabeth Wyn Wood, world-renowned singer Gordon Lightfoot and sporting giants such as Jake Gaudaur and Walter Knox. “These and other internationally-renowned people from Orillia have helped build and shape our country and, not only that, they lived in our city and supported our city,” said Soczka. “We have an incredible heritage.” Year-long festivities kicked off with a colossal New Year’s Eve fireworks display and Levee. Throughout the year, the city’s popular festivals will help mark the milestone, said Soczka, noting the Mariposa Folk Festival, Scottish Festival, Canada Day and other events will incorporate the milestone in 2017 festivities. There will also be an informative […]

Tap Into Maple
With snowshoes providing solid footing, Tom Shaw was traipsing through his Oro-Medonte Township acreage last week, drilling metal spigots into the 4,000 maple trees that will, in a matter of weeks, produce about 160,000 litres of sap – that magnificent watery liquid needed to create mouth-watering maple syrup. “We have been tapping trees in this forest since 1904 and many of those original trees are still producing liquid gold today,” said Shaw. “We have multiple generations of customers who come out to visit us each year … because we offer a family atmosphere where you can experience a tradition that is unique to this part of the world.” Shaw’s Maple Syrup Bush, located on Line 14 just a few minutes south of Orillia, lies in the heart of Ontario’s Lake Country where the promise of spring means the advent of a season of sweetness – and an opportunity to Tap Into Maple! DISCOVER THE SCENIC WATERWAYS OF LAKE COUNTRY
Be sure to share your experiences with us by tagging #PaddleOLC on Social Media! One of the best ways to truly experience the wonder and beauty of Ontario’s Lake Country is to get out on the water – a credo Mike Bartlett lives by. The paddling guru from Swift Canoe and Kayak of Waubaushene spends as much time on the water as he can. The only thing he enjoys more than being on the water himself is ensuring others can revel in the experience. “We get a lot of people who come to Ontario’s Lake Country from Toronto who rent equipment, who are looking to get out on the water, but don’t really know much about our waterways,” said Bartlett. “They often have questions about parking, local outfitters, local sights to see …” With that in mind, Ontario’s Lake Country, with support from Regional Tourism Organization 7 and Tourism Simcoe County, worked with Bartlett to create an informative Paddling Guide and interactive web component at www.PaddleLakeCountry.com– you can access the paddling routes on your smart phone – aimed at people interested in kayaking, canoeing and stand-up paddle-boarding. They are geared for all levels of experience from beginner to intermediate. “We are very […]

TAP INTO MAPLE – A REAL CANADIAN TREASURE WITH TASTE!
Maple syrup – a natural gift in Ontario’s Lake Country. Come and visit Ontario’s Lake Country, Orillia & area and Springwater Township for all things Maple this spring! Story by: Kim Goggins When Tom Shaw is asked how he likes to eat maple syrup, there is not a moment’s hesitation when he answers. “On top of vanilla ice cream and bananas,” he says and then admits, “I probably eat a lot more syrup just sampling it throughout the season.” With his family’s name being synonymous with maple syrup for the last 112 years, Tom has had his share of syrup samplings every spring, when the sap flows in Ontario’s Lake Country. Located on Oro Line 14, close to Carthew Bay, Shaw’s Pancake House is open from mid-February to Mid-April and during that time, self-guided and on-demand tours of their sugar bush and maple syrup production are offered. Thousands of people delight in Shaw’s famous maple syrup and products every year. While Shaw’s 6,000 taps produce about 160,000 litres of sap to create approximately 4,000 litres of maple syrup, there are smaller operations in Oro-Medonte, Severn and Ramara that also boast the tasty syrup.
