It will be jazz, jazz, jazz in downtown Orillia as the 25th annual Orillia Jazz Festival hits the streets this weekend (Oct. 16 – 18, 2016)
“This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Orillia Jazz Festival and, with fantastic support from venues, sponsors including Casino Rama, City of Orillia and the Mariposa Folk Foundation, we have pulled out all the stops to put together an amazing, jam-packed weekend of jazz performances at 15 venues – all except one within walking distance of one another,” Committee member Susan Willsey said.
“We’ve designed the schedule so you can enjoy as many of these acts as possible: Dine to fine jazz both evenings of the fest, groove to fantastic late-night jazz, catch matinees on Saturday and Sunday and even shop to jazz without missing our headliners – The Shuffle Demons on Saturday evening,” she added.
Get on the “Spadina Bus” with festival headliners The Shuffle Demons, proudly presented by Parry Automotive, as they bring their brand of “electrifying jazz-funk musical fusion to the OCC (Orillia Community Church- former Cinema 4) on Saturday night. Enjoy a slice of Mariposa Market anniversary cake and The Will Davis Trio at 6:30 p.m., followed by The Shuffle Demons in concert at 7:30 p.m. Tickets to the reception and Shuffle Demons concert are $25 advance or $30 at the door. They are available at Alleycats Music and Art, Apple Annie’s Cafe, Apple Annie’s Store and online at www.orilliajazzfest.ca
Brewery Bay features Juno award winner Lorne Lofsky…”one incredible guitar player… a fresh and exciting style” (JazzView), at 9 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 16, backed by The Joe Huron Trio, mainstays of our regional jazz scene. Their very special guest is Juno award nominated vocalist Carol McCartney…“she delivers with spice and electricity… a sexy voice!” (eJazzNews).
“In fact, we have snagged three of the best female jazz vocalists in Canada for this year’s festival – Carol, Tia Brazda and Sophie Perlman. Sophia will be performing at Marcel’s on Saturday evening of the festival with marvellous pianist Adrean Farrugia, who appeared at last year’s festival with Jane Bunnett,” Willsey said.
Don’t miss Juno award winning pianist/multi-instrumentalist Don Thompson and Pat Labarbera, “one of the world’s most exciting saxophonists” (Canadian Jazz Archive) in concert at St. Paul’s Church on Saturday afternoon. Other fine jazz artists you will see include The Kim Ratcliffe Quartet, Chris Ness, Jake Thompson, Mark Hathaway, Pete Woolidge, Mike Lewis, The Cole Mendez Trio, The Ronnie Douglas Band, The Lisa Hutchinson Band, The Orillia Silver Band, Jazz-eppi, Ad Lib, Matt Rait, The Sensations and Richard Jackson.
