In Ontario’s Lake Country, winter is welcomed like an old friend.

“There’s no escaping winter, so why not get out and have fun?” says Sarah Huter, director of marketing and promotions at Mount St. Louis Moonstone, a popular ski hill and snowboarding paradise. “There’s no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing. So dress in layers, put on your waterproof ski pants and let our instructors do the rest.”

The family-run facility features 36 runs, two half pipes and three terrain parks. “We have something for everyone,” says Huter, noting its amenities are “gnarly enough” for experienced skiers and also appeal to “little rippers.” “Mount St. Louis Moonstone is the best place to learn – our runs are very wide and we have special chair lifts for kids. It’s easier than you think.”

This will be the fifth season for night skiing at the Oro-Medonte facility that boasts the industry’s fastest chair lifts and state-of-the-art snow-making equipment. “We’ve made an incredible investment in snow-making and lighting because we want to offer a world-class experience,” she said.

If you prefer cross-country skiing, Hardwood Ski and Bike is ideal. With 40 kilometres of groomed trails for cross-country skiing and 11 kilometres for snow-shoeing you sure won’t run out of winter fun here! Their facility features a full-service chalet with a café, retail shop, service and repair shop and they offer lessons and programming for all ages and abilities.

Hardwood has hosted elite competitions and is a venue for the 2020 Ontario Winter Games, but is also perfect for beginners. “We offer great introductory packages, family lessons … that help people get comfortable on skis,” they say. “Kids can do programs while mom and dad go out and enjoy a ski, come back and have lunch together and then go out together … it’s a great thing to do as a family.”

Winter is inevitable. In Ontario’s Lake Country, you can embrace it and enjoy it.
